Video | Superior Chemical Resistance Over Any Vapor Barrier on the Market Today

The Land Science research and development team has invested years in developing the TerraShield vapor barrier system, which delivers orders of magnitude higher vapor intrusion protection as compared to the leading vapor barrier system. The new, innovative, metalized material and multiple layers of protection are key to the increased performance. The R&D team also improved on the core material, incorporating nitrile, known for its chemical resistance, as a key component. The result is 100 times more effective protection compared to existing vapor barriers in laboratory tests.

eBook | 6 Reasons to Specify a VI Barrier Offering the Highest Level of Chemical Resistance

For properties where there is underlying contamination that cannot be removed and represents a serious risk to human health, it is important to have a solution that can effectively mitigate that risk and provide both building occupants and owners assurances that they are shielded from physical and financial harm. TerraShield offers a higher level of protection compared to any vapor barrier system available today. With industry-leading standards for installation along with robust warranty options, there is simply no better option on the market for industrial, commercial, or residential vapor intrusion mitigation.

Project Snapshot| MonoShield Installed Faster and at a Significantly Lower Cost than System with Taped Seams

Sawyer Yards is an apartment community located in Houston’s vibrant Arts District neighborhood. Chlorinated solvents were detected in soil gas, posing a potential vapor intrusion risk to future residents. The original vapor mitigation system (VMS) specification called for a single-layer barrier with taped seams. However, the building’s foundation contained many utility penetrations and terminations, requiring numerous taped seams. These taped seams significantly reduce application efficiency and ultimately result in potential barrier weak points. In contrast, MonoShield® incorporates a spray-applied nitrile-advanced asphalt latex, offering superior application efficiency with unmatched chemical resistance.

Brochure | Why Smart Developers are Choosing MonoShield

MonoShield is a chemically resistant and easy-to-apply barrier specifically designed as a preemptive solution for vapor intrusion at brownfield redevelopment sites. It is backed by unparalleled design support, standard industry warranty, and a network of certified applicators who can ensure quality installation. Featured Video | Warehouse Made Safe Against Contaminant Vapors by Retro-Coat Application

A property developer was preparing a former furniture warehouse in an urban industrial area in Los Angeles, CA for a new tenant. Based on the recommendation of Farallon Consulting, a full-service environmental consulting firm specializing in brownfield redevelopment, the property owner opted to preemptively mitigate vapor intrusion risk by installing Retro-Coat, a passive vapor mitigation system for existing buildings. The installation of Retro-Coat was safe, fast, and efficient due to the application by certified Land Science installer, Pacific Coast Contracting. State and local regulatory bodies were also on-board with this approach, given their familiarity with Retro-Coat as a proven, effective vapor mitigation barrier.

Project Snapshot | Leading Hotel Chain Moves Forward with Brownfield Site Construction Following Installation of Vapor Barrier System

A leading hotel brand broke ground on a new residential-styled suite hotel in an expanding commercial district in Ohio. The first of its kind in the state, the brownfield site required a safe and effective vapor barrier system to mitigate soil gas vapor contaminants from former industrial activities in the area, including spilled chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons. The environmental consultant proposed installing a TerraShield vapor barrier system to eliminate the potential exposure risk of building staff and guests to these vapors. In addition to providing superior chemical resistance, TerraShield does not require taped seams which markedly improves the installation efficiency. The Land Science certified applicator installed TerraShield successfully, maintaining the schedule and allowing the hotel to proceed toward its grand opening.

Project Snapshot | TerraShield Chosen as Most Protective Economical Vapor Intrusion Mitigation Solution for Large Logistics Facility

A long-vacant San Francisco Bay Area brownfield was once the site of a former chemical plant that produced chlorofluorocarbons, fuel additive anti-knock compounds, and titanium dioxide from 1956 to 1997. With onsite rail service and more than three million households within 50 miles, the property was considered a prime location for a new 2.2 million square foot logistics development. However, the site’s prior industrial history left residual volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the subsurface and posed a potential vapor intrusion risk. Following a cost-benefit analysis and thorough evaluation of contaminant vapor barrier systems available, TerraShield® Metalized Nitrile Contaminant Vapor Barrier was selected for the new logistics building

Featured Case Study: TerraShield Mitigates Vapor Intrusion on Former Industrial Site

A former industrial site located in Southern California was targeted for redevelopment and chosen to be developed into a federally funded public site. Historical operations left the original property contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In addition to the presence of these contaminants, new buildings constructed in the area are required to feature a vapor intrusion mitigation system due to the presence of methane gas in the soil, which may eventually enter unprotected buildings on the surface. Because of these factors and the completed site’s intended purpose for public use, an effective vapor mitigation system was necessary.
